You really don’t want to miss Artsapalooza 2014.

There will be art to view at by Teddi  Jan Covell at DeGrasse Jewelry and  by Fariba Dayhim  at Woodman’s Bar and Grill.

Thomas Griffith will be giving an art talk titled “Is Art Being Stolen from our Lives?  What we can do about it!”at Thai Orchid from 8:00p.m. -8:40 p.m.

There will be tango by Shiwa Noh, first at Keith Anderson Community Center from 6:00p.m. -6:40 p.m. and again at the Bear Brew Pub (upstairs) from 8:00p.m. -8:40 p.m. Come watch them perform and perhaps learn to tango yourself!

At the Keith Anderson Community Center from 8:00p.m. -8:40 p.m., Annie Jewel, who attends Brewer Midddle School and Chana Wingard, who attends Orono Middle School will be performing a dance. Both have taken dance for several years with Mary Drew.
Abby Wingard, and Erin Luthin, both are juniors at Orono High School, will perform a cello duet.

Nicholas Southwick is a student at Gordon College and studies flute at Longy School of Music.  He will be studying flute this summer in Paris. See him along with Hanna Renedo(violin) from  7:00p.m. -7:40 p.m. at the Church of Universal Fellowship and then stay to hear Divisi and New Renaissance perform a cappella music from 8:00p.m. -8:40 p.m.

Evan Pollard will be playing his guitar at The Roost from 7:00p.m. -7:40 p.m.  and Sarah Newcomb and Karl Hance will be delighting the audience from 6:00p.m. -6:40 p.m. at the Black Bear Brewery. Also at the Brewery will be Hannah Barry,singing some tunes,  who will split the set with our young artist Tori Grindel(visual art)  from 7:00p.m. -7:40 p.m. Lydia Bolin and Allison Pickering will be singing at Harvest Moon from 8:00p.m. -8:40 p.m.

Downstairs at the Bear Brew Pub will be Cameron Guay and Mickala Wheeler from 6:00p.m. -6:40 p.m. and William Sawyer from 7:00p.m. -7:40 p.m.

Be sure to stop by the Orono Public Library to see Teen Reader’s Theatre from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Jim Chasse will  have two sets to perform this Artsapalooza. Catch him at Harvest Moon from 6:00p.m. -6:40 p.m.  and again at The Family Dog from 7:00p.m. -7:40 p.m.

Some more musical offerings

Come by Thai Orchid  from 7:00 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. to listen to 40’s Jazz Standards sung by Nancy Leavitt. She is a local artist(http://www.nancyleavitt.com/) who happens to have a fabulous singing voice. She sings with the A Capella group Euphony. Nancy will be accompanied by Douglas Beck,  current music Director at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Waterville, Maine and who gives lessons in voice, keyboard, piano and organ. Some of University of Maine Voice Faculty will be entertaining us at the Orono Methodist Church from 7:00 p.m.- 7:40 p.m.

Olde Thyme Machine, who play folk music, will be performing twice! Come hear them first, at Verve from 7:00 p.m.- 7:40 p.m. and again at Bear Brew Pub (upstairs) at 9:00 p.m.- 9:40 p.m.

At the Church of Universal Fellowship from 6:00 p.m. – 6:40 p.m. The Artesani Family and Friends (vocal/instrumental) will be playing. They are a returning popular act!

The University Inn will host the Orono High School Jazz Combo for two back-to-back sessions: 6:00 p.m. – 6:40 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.- 7:40 p.m. Come enjoy this wonderful music in an outdoor venue.

Jessie Walker will enter ninth grade at Orono High School in the fall.  She has been recognized at the national level in spoken word competitions and is also an accomplished musician. Come listen to Jessie sing and play her bass at The Store from 6:00 p.m. – 6:40 p.m.

The Silent Auction this year will be at DeGrasse Jewelry, right on Mill Street, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.  We have some great stuff for you to bid on — a 45 min. set by Good Time Sound, 30 min. set by Sarah Newcomb (acoustic folk), jewelry by Mary Callaway,  and Print of the Bangor Opera House, just to name a few. Some Literary Offerings

Don’t forget to check out some of our local authors and poets at Artsapalooza 2014.

Katherine Ellis, Francois Amar, Jason Canniff, & Sarah Farnham will be doing a poetry reading at The Store from 8:00 p.m. to 8:40 p.m.

Bob Klose, author of  “Adopting Alyosha — a Single Man Finds a Son in Russia,” “Small Worlds — Adopted Sons, Pet Piranhas & Other Mortal Concerns,” and “The Three-Legged Woman & Other Excursions in Teaching”  plus numerous essays will be reading at Harvest Moon from 7:00 p.m. to 7:40 p.m.

Sandy Phippen, author of  Kitchen Boy,  plus numerous other literary  achievements  will be reading at the Orono Public Library from 7:00 p.m. to 7:40 p.m.

Stillwater Community Arts Young Artist 2014 Performing Arts Scholarship Winners

Below are this year’s scholarship winners in the Stillwater Community Arts Young Artist Program who are able to perform for Artsapalooza 2014. We are very proud of them all!

Paige Bacon is now going into her senior year at Hermon High School and has been singing and playing guitar since the young age of six. Paige has competed in many vocal competitions and last summer she won the Eastern Maine American Idol contest and got to audition in front of American Idol producers.  She is involved in her school’s theatre and show choir  programs, won two soloist awards at the State of Maine Show Choir competition where her show choir also placed first for two years.

Brooke Nason has dreamed of being a singer since the young age of three and at thirteen she began writing her own songs and a year after that she picked up the guitar and found her true calling. Brook is now going into her senior year at Hermon High School and is involved in her school’s band, show choir, and theatre program. She is a captain of the reigning 2014 State Show Choir Champions: the Hermon High School Treble Makers.

Daniel Perkins just finished his junior year at Hermon High School and has been involved in musical theatre for nine years.  He has  won a soloist award at the State of Maine Show Choir competition and is a captain of the Hermon High School Treble Makers who have won the state championship in 2013 and 2014. Daniel states “Musical theatre is more than just putting on make-up, a costume, and sing for a few hours. Musical theatre is an escape from our world.”

Hear Paige, Daniel and Brooke at the Family Dog from 8:00 p.m. to 8:40 p.m.  and at the Church of Universal Fellowship from 9:00 p.m. to 9:40 p.m.

Tori Grindel is a visual artist who attends Old Town High School. She says” I want to express what I can for myself and others. Sometimes I don’t even know what it is I’m trying to tell everyone,but it manages to show better when I can physically present it to the world.”

Tori will be showing her art at the Black Bear Brewery from 7:00 to 7:40 p.m. along with singer Hannah Berry.

Lydia Bolin attends Orono High School where she continues her pursuit of singing which began in middle school with an inspiring chorus teacher. She was in All State Chorus this year.

Lydia will be performing at Harvest Moon along with Allison Pickering from 8:00 p.m. to 8:40 p.m.

Hanna Renado just graduated from Orono High School and has been studying the violin since she was eight years old. For the past four years she has studied with Gilda Joffe, who is Senior Faculty Chair of the Bay Chamber Music School.

Hanna will be performing at the Church of Universal Fellowship from 7:00 to 7:40 p.m. as will Nicolas Southwick on the flute.

Katie Woodilla studies at Herman High School and aspires “to stand on the Broadway stage” as a singer and actress. She has been participating in theatre since she was in kindergarten and has done straight plays and musicals at school, in competition and in community theatre.

Connor Magliozzi is going into his sophmore year at Hermon High School and aspires to be a comic actor. He already has a number of theatrical roles to his credit, including Pigpen in Charlie Brown and Danny Zuko in Grease.

Artsapalooza Goes Green with Rose Bike Shop’s Bike Valet Service!

Once again you can ride your bike to Stillwater Artsapalooza, park it at Rose’s Bike Shop (9 Pine St.), and visit all of the venues without having to worry about where to safely park your bike.  When you are done, simply return to Rose’s Bike Shop,  pick up your bike, which has been safely guarded, and ride home!  Rose’s Bike Valet Service will be available starting at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, and will be open until 10 p.m.  Thank you to Rose’s Bike Shop for  great service to Stillwater Artsapalooza 2014!!

Kate Kirby

Kate Kirby is a documentary film maker who grew up in Orono. She founded Kindred Planet Productions “to capture the interconnectedness of a 21st century world, raise awareness around social justice issues, and inspire action.” Her first documentary -Quinoa Soup, takes place in Bolivia and will be screened at this year’s KahBang Film Festival in Bangor. She is currently co-producing her second documentary, Elephant Keeper, filmed in Laos, with Meg Webster.You can find out more about Kate at www.KindredPlanetProductions.com.
