Jazz and Musicals–what’s not to love?

Musicals are built on fantastic music, and so we are incredibly pleased that the group “Colin and Friends” has chosen Stillwater Artsapalooza as a place to serenade us with a few musical theatre tunes.  The group is comprised of Hannah Barry, Maida Cordero, Nestor Gonzalez, Jon Hawley, Sam Kunz, Lexi Lowell, Matt Skaves, Kurt Strock, Molly Webster and the uber talented Colin Graebert on piano.  Colin and Friends will be singing songs from Bill Finn’s A New Brain, Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years, Tom Kitt’s Next to Normal, songs from Glee, and songs from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.  They are performing at the Church of Universal Fellowship from 9:00-9:40p.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2011.

Old Town High School is known New England-wide for its outstanding music program and Stillwater Community Arts could not be happier to have the Old Town High School Jazz Combo playing at Stillwater Artsapalooza!   Over the past fifteen years the Old Town High School music program has been a program of excellence. The Concert Band and Symphonic Band have consistently received superior and one ratings at music festivals held all over New England, Washington D.C. and New York City.  In 1997, the Old Town High School Marching Band was selected to march in President Clinton’s Inaugural Parade with a short appearance on CNN. The marching band has also performed parades in Woonsocket, Rhode Island and three performances in the Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington D.C. The Old Town High School Jazz Ensemble has won many awards over the past ten years. It has performed at the Monterey High School Jazz Festval in Monterey, Calfornia and has won the Berklee Jazz Festival four times in the last ten years.  Stop by The Roost from 6:00-6:40p.m. to hear this fantastic group play.

Authors and an Eclectic Pop-Jazz-Country Band!

What we have loved most about organizing the first annual Stillwater Artspalooza is the wondrous amounts of different artistic talents present in the Orono-Old Town-Bangor area.  There are dancers, singers, musicians, thespians, authors, painters, sculptors, poets, and the list goes on and on.  A few more of the talented local people who have agreed to be a part of Stillwater Artspalooza are the well-known Maine authors: Robert Klose and Sanford Phippen, and the awesomely eclectic jazz-blues-pop-country band Velma.

Robert Klose is a professor of Biological Science at the University of Maine at Augusta and a well-known Maine author.  His most recent book, The Three-legged Woman and Other Excursions in Teaching, chronicles his experiences teaching diverse students at the college level.  Klose describes with equal doses of care and wry wit those who are profoundly unfit for college, and their often inadequate command of the lingua franca.  He reflects on the decline of reading for enjoyment and the folly of regarding email as a praiseworthy substitute for expository writing. He details what works in the classroom, identifies what has failed, and relates stories of the absurd, the sublime, and the unanticipated, such as one student’s outburst following a discussion of evolution: “For what you have taught today you shall be damned to everlasting fires of hell!”  Tempering thoughtfulness with a light touch and plenty of humor, these essays prove that teaching, an “imperfect occupation,” remains a “special profession.”

We are lucky that he will be sharing these stories and much more at the Maine Maven from 7:00-7:40p.m. at Stillwater Artspalooza!

Sanford Phippen is an expert story teller, and not just an expert story teller, but an expert Maine storyteller, so we were quite delighted when he agreed to tell some of his humorous, touching stories at Stillwater Artsapalooza.

Sanford “Sandy” Phippen grew up in Hancock, graduated from Sumner Memorial High School in East Sullivan, received his BA in English from the University of Maine and earned an MA in English Education from Syracuse University.  He is the author of The Police Know Everything, People trying to be Good, Cheap Gossip, Kitchen Boy, and The Messiah in the Memorial Gym, plus two histories of Hancock and a play, Standing, Just Outside the Door.  He has edited The Best Maine Stories and High Clouds Soaring, Storms Driving Low : The Letters of Ruth Moore. His works have appeared in numerous anthologies and publications including, The New York Times, DownEast Magazine and Maine Times.  Sandy spent numerous years as a high schol English teacher at Orono High School, and is now retired, though he continues to teach writing at the University of Maine.  Sandy will be reading some of his stories from 8:00-8:30 at Verve on Saturday, June 25.  Don’t miss this chance to hear this witty, perceptive Maine author and teacher.

On the other side of Mill Street at The Roost from 8:00-8:40p.m. you can catch the fantastic vocal stylings of the band Velma!  Called “the love child of Ella Fitzgerald and Lyle Lovett,” Velma has her own way with a mix of pop-jazz, blues, and even some country.  The band features Steve McKay on lead guitar and accordion, Sue Hamlett on percussion, Harvey Kail on harmonica, and Paul Riechmann on upright bass.  Each member takes turns with the vocals and keeps the audience guessing as to what will be heard next!  Unfortunately the talented rhythm guitar and mandolin player, Margo Lukens, will be out of town on June 25th, but not to worry, the other four members of Velma have an exciting batch of new songs and old favorites to perform!

Origami Galore!

One of the fabulous visual artists displaying her work at Stillwater Artspalooza is Eva Szillery.  Eva obtained her PhD in Mathematics at the prestigious Eotvos Lorand University and it is there that she started folding modular origami to help enrich the teaching of mathematics for students.
Eva is now the Maine State Director of the American Mathematics Competitions, the founder of the Maine Junior Engineering Technical Society(MJETS), the Maine Mathematics Science and Engineering Talent Search(MMSETS) and the Maine Origami Society.  She is the 2005 recipient of the University of Maine Educator Recognition Award for programming Excellence of the MMSETS and MJETS Programs. Szillery’s modular origami work has been exhibited in Lewiston, Portland, Bangor, Orono, Bath, Boothbay Harbor, Brunswick, and Presque Isle.   Her fascinating art will be on display for Stillwater Artsapalooza at Fiberphilia from 6-10p.m.  Be sure to check out this intriguing artist!

We are also lucky that Molly Webster has found time in her busy, busy schedule to manage to fit in a showing at Stillwater Artsapalooza!  Molly is a local vocal talent originally from Patten, Maine.  She attended the University of Maine and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Vocal Performance and a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting. She currently owns a private voice studio in the Bangor area where she teaches all styles of music.  She is incredibly excited to be a part of the first annual Stillwater Artsapalooza and will be performing varied works from Gershwin to Adele to The Decemberists. She is also excited to showcase one of her students from Veazie, who will be singing a Leonard Cohen tune.  Also joining her for a few songs will be Mr. Pat Sylvia, a graduate of UMaine in Guitar Performance.  This promises to be an excellent display of incredibly talent and we are grateful to have these artist performing at The Roost from 7-7:40p.m. on Saturday, June 25.  To learn more about Molly Webster please visit  http://mollysvoicestudio.com/

A Capella Groups, Painting, and Musical Theatre, Oh My!

Who doesn’t love A Capella music?  Tight harmonies, fun lyrics, and an all around good time, which may be why our featured a capella group is aptly named Good-Time Sounds.  Good-Time Sounds has been singing together for over two years.  They first harmonized as the cast of the clever musical Forever Plaid at the Waterville Opera House and they enjoyed the sounds and company so much that they just kept on “busting chords” together as an a capella quartet!  They love to sing and perform a variety of musical genres from doo-wop to barbershop, contemporary to classical.  Some of their favorites are Blue Moon, Brown-Eyed Girl, Happy Together, King of the Road, Mood Indigo, Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, and the list goes on.  So come hear this fantastic group singing at Stillwater Artsapalooza on June 25 at Verve from 6:00-6:40p.m. and then again at The Store from 7:00-7:40 p.m.

One of the fantastic visual artists who will be featured at Stillwater Artsapalooza is the incomparable Julie Miller.  Julie Miller, a beloved nurse for School Union 87 (Orono and Veazie) until 2000, lives in Old Town, Maine, and now has an Art Studio, “FeatherStone”, where she creates works of watercolor, pen and ink, silver and feather jewelery and notecards.  Julie describes her art as the following:
“Within my paintings, I hope to give voice to those that could not speak for themselves. My medium is mostly watercolor inks, and india ink. all of my images come to me in dreamtime, and the poetry I share with them are their stories..
may your journey be a walk of peace, hope and light.”  Julie’s work will be at Stillwater Artsapalooza on June 25 on display at Ted Curtis Law Offices from 6:00p.m.-10:00p.m. To see more work by this fantastic artist visit her website:
